Why you should check pH levels in your haircare

Why you should check pH levels in your haircare

Do you suffer from irritated (scalp) skin? This could be due to the PH value in the products you use. Many products contain a much too high PH value, which can cause your skin and hair to dry out. Our Fiona Franchimon haircare line has a PH value between 4.59 and 5.45 and are therefore all PH neutral. This means that they are as gentle as possible on skin and hair. Products with a PH value from 6 can already dry out the skin and hair. But how exactly does this work?

With the PH value you measure the acidity of something. A PH value is indicated in the numbers 0 to 10, where a PH of 7 is seen as PH neutral. With every step you take, the pH level is 10 times more acidic. So going from 6 to 7 is already 10 times more acidic, but for example going from 6 to 8 is already 100 times more sour.

Our hair naturally has a PH value of about 5 to 5.5. Products that are much more acidic and have a higher PH value can dry out the hair and skin. Did you know, for example, that the PH value of tap water in the Netherlands is 8? So this is a lot more acidic than our skin and hair. Just showering or washing your hair with water can cause dehydration. You will notice this, for example, if you take a very long and hot shower, you will experience drier skin.

In addition, almost all shampoos that you buy in a supermarket contain a higher PH value than 6. The reason that the products in the supermarket often contain such a high PH value? Many supermarket shampoos are mixed with water, which has a PH value of 8. The more water is added, the higher the PH value becomes.

We are all familiar with the so-called all-in-one shampoo and shower gel products. These products often have an even higher PH value of 8 or sometimes even 9. So you can imagine that these products, especially in combination with water, have a bad influence on the health of skin and hair. Or take baby shampoo, for example. This shampoo is specially made so that it does not sting your child's eyes, this is done by equating the PH value of the product to the PH value of our eyes, which is approximately 7.5. Very nice for the eyes, but a lot less pleasant for the hair and body. When a product has a higher PH value than 7, the hair shaft and cuticle layer of the hair becomes soft and it starts to swell. The consequence? Dry, porous and brittle hair.

Do you suffer from:

  • Tangles
  • Frizzy hair
  • Dull hair
  • Split and broken hair
  • Porous hair
  • Weak and fragile hair
  • Dry hair

Then it could very well be that you use a product with a PH value higher than 6. Products with the correct PH value between 4.5 and 5.5 give the following results:

  • Smooth hair
  • Shiny hair
  • Hydrated hair
  • Less porous hair
  • Strong and bouncy hair
  • No itchy scalp
  • Less likely to split and break hair
  • Better hydrated scalp
  • Protection and control against bacteria, fungi and other scalp conditions, such as dandruff
  • Helps against limescale build-up in hard water
